The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP): Shopping Across Multi-Store Carts
Co-developed by Google and Shopify, the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) allows AI assistants to build cart states across multiple stores simultaneously.
Shopping in 2026 is moving away from jumping between isolated tabs. Google's introduction of the Universal Cart means consumers can pile products from diverse retailers into a single, unified interface hosted inside Google Gemini, Gmail, or YouTube.
Underpinning this capability is the **Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)**, an open standard designed to serialize shopping carts across different platforms. When an agent discovers a product on your site, it queries your UCP schema to check inventory and add it to the user's unified cart.
Exposing Your UCP Product Data
To participate in UCP searches, merchants must output schema feeds that define exact product availability, pricing, and checkout endpoints. If a buying bot cannot verify real-time stock levels, it will automatically filter the item out of the buyer's option list.
Verify if your site is fully ready for UCP integrations on our dedicated AI Commerce portal. We also offer certified Web Design and Development solutions and the ScaleGuard AI platform to protect and coordinate your shopping cart payloads.
